Working Principles of Multifunctional Sewing Machine Functions
I. Core Basic Sewing Functions
1. Straight Stitch
The needle carries upper thread to pierce fabric and form a loop; the bobbin hook instantly catches and interlocks with bobbin thread. The take-up lever tightens the loop to form continuous straight stitches. Adjustable stitch length for basic joining, hemming and edge stitching.
2. Zigzag Stitch
Driven by built-in cam or motor, the needle bar swings left-right reciprocally while piercing fabric vertically. Cooperated with thread interlocking, continuous zigzag stitches form. Adjustable width and density for overlocking (anti-fraying), stretch fabric sewing and appliqué fixing.
3. Overlock Stitch
Combined with needle's small left-right swing and feed dog's uniform feeding, it forms wrapped overlock stitches on raw edges via double/triple thread interweaving. Firmly locks fabric yarns, replaces overlock machine for edge treatment without extra hemming.
II. Advanced Sewing Functions
1. Stretch Stitch
Adopts composite structure of micro-zigzag + elastic thread loop with stretch and rebound. Small needle swing amplitude and dense pitch enable stitches to deform synchronously with stretch fabrics, avoiding thread breakage and fabric tearing. Suitable for knitwear, spandex and rib fabrics.
2. Buttonhole Stitch
Semi-automatic Buttonhole Stitch
Built-in cam for size positioning; manually completes left straight stitch → front bartack → right straight stitch → rear bartack. Bartack stitches reinforce edges (anti-fraying); adjustable buttonhole length.
Full-automatic Buttonhole Stitch
Integrated intelligent positioning system; one-step completion after setting button size (double-side straight stitches + double-end reinforced bartacks). Dense bartacks lock edges firmly; no manual adjustment needed for flat/round buttonholes.
3. Button Sewing Stitch
Feed dog sinks, needle bar stops swinging; vertical needle piercing forms cross/parallel reinforced stitches via double thread interweaving to fix buttons. Adjustable pitch for 2/4-hole buttons; some models have positioning slots to prevent deviation.
4. Applique & Decorative Stitch
Driven by pattern cam or CNC program, needle bar swings in irregular curves/arcs. Cooperated with precise feed dog feeding, forms crescent, shell, wave and lattice stitches. Adjustable density and width for fabric decoration, appliqué reinforcement and lace embellishment.
5. Blind Hem Stitch
Minimal needle left-right swing; only tip occasionally pierces folded interlayer. Most stitches hidden on reverse side, tiny dots on front, forming almost invisible hem. Suitable for trouser, skirt and garment hems of various thicknesses.
6. Reinforcement Stitch
Feed dog rotates reversely to drive fabric backward; needle pierces reversely synchronously. 2-3 reverse stitches overlap with forward ones at start/end to prevent loosening from pulling, essential for sewing finishing.
III. Practical Auxiliary Functions
1. Automatic Needle Threader
Built-in elastic metal hook; pressing the button makes the hook pass through needle eye, catch and pull upper thread through. No manual threading, solves difficulties from poor eyesight/fine eye, improves efficiency.
2. Automatic Thread Cutter
Press the button after sewing; built-in metal cutter cuts upper and bobbin threads, tightens bobbin thread in bobbin area with short upper thread left. No manual scissors needed, ensures coherent operation.
3. Feed Dog Up/Down
Lifting lever controls feed dog height: raised for automatic fabric feeding (regular sewing); lowered (flush with needle plate) to stop feeding, facilitating thick fabric sewing, appliqué, free motion embroidery and manual positioning.
4. Stitch Length Adjustment
Adjust feed dog's feeding amplitude via knob to control stitch spacing. Larger pitch for thick fabrics/heavy threads; smaller pitch for thin/delicate fabrics to prevent wrinkling.
5. Presser Foot Pressure Adjustment
Top pressure knob adjusts presser foot's downward force: increased for thick fabrics/denim (anti-slipping, smooth feeding); decreased for thin fabrics/silk (anti-creases, anti-stretch deformation), suitable for various thicknesses.
6. Free Motion Embroidery & Quilting
With feed dog lowered (no automatic feeding), operator moves fabric freely. Cooperated with vertical needle piercing and thread interweaving, completes free embroidery, quilting and pattern drawing; stitch direction controlled manually.
Supplementary: High-Frequency Technical Terms
Upper Thread: Thread passing through the needle, drawn from the spool
Bobbin Thread: Thread placed in the bobbin at the bottom of the sewing machine
The core of all sewing functions is "Interlocking of upper & bobbin thread", a universal principle that can be added to the core introduction at the beginning of product detail pages.
