Oscillating Shuttle (Vertical Shuttle) for Domestic Sewing Machines

The oscillating shuttle, also known as vertical shuttle, is the classic hook mechanism widely equipped on traditional domestic lockstitch sewing machines. Unlike rotary hooks that rotate fully 360°, the oscillating shuttle swings back and forth within a limited angle to catch the upper thread loop and interlock with the bobbin thread to form lock stitches.

Main Structure & Working Principle

The complete oscillating shuttle assembly consists of shuttle body, shuttle race, shuttle carrier, bobbin case and bobbin. When the needle descends through fabric and rises slightly, a thread loop forms. The shuttle point catches this loop and carries it around the bobbin case. The positioning finger keeps the bobbin case stationary while only the outer shuttle shell oscillates. Upper thread and lower bobbin thread cross tightly to create uniform lockstitch.

Frequent problems include skipped stitches, thread jamming and broken threads, mostly caused by worn shuttle point, improper clearance between needle and shuttle point, dirty shuttle race or loose positioning finger. Regularly remove lint and oil the shuttle race sliding surface. Replace the shuttle immediately once the shuttle point has burrs to avoid damaging threads and needles.
