Application of Lettuce Edge on Overlock Machine

Introduction

Lettuce edge, also known as frilly rolled hem, is a popular decorative stitching finished by overlock sergers. Different from regular plain rolled hem, it creates natural wavy ruffles along fabric edges, widely used in women's apparel, loungewear, lingerie, swimwear and knit accessories. This craft relies on adjusted differential feed and rolled hem setup to form uniform undulating frills without extra manual hemming or gathering work.

1. Suitable Fabrics for Lettuce Edge

Elastic lightweight textiles are the best choices for gorgeous lettuce frills:

Spandex jersey, rayon knit, milk silk and modal fabric;

Thin chiffon, stretch lace, lightweight cotton interlock.Stiff thick cloth like canvas, thick denim cannot form natural ruffles and is not applicable.

2. Key Machine Parameter Settings

2.1 Basic Rolled Hem Configuration

Retract stitch finger completely and narrow blade cutting width to switch the overlock into rolled hem mode; apply woolly nylon thread on upper looper for plump, full edge finish.

2.2 Differential Feed (Core Setting for Ruffles)

Set differential feed ratio from 2.0 to 3.0, the higher the ratio, the bigger the lettuce wave:

Ratio 2.0~2.3: small delicate frills for underwear neckline and cuffs;

Ratio 2.4~3.0: large obvious wavy edges for scarf, dress hem and decorative trim.

2.3 Stitch Length & Thread Tension

Stitch length: 1.2~2.0 mm for soft elastic frills;Tension adjustment: slightly tighten lower looper tension, loosen needle thread to avoid fabric puckering while curling edges.

3. Practical Sewing Operation Steps

Pre-test stitching on fabric scraps to tweak differential ratio until ideal wavy effect comes out;

Lay fabric flat against the edge guide, feed naturally without pulling or pushing the cloth manually;

Sew at constant medium speed, slow down when stitching curved parts such as armholes and round necklines;

Avoid sudden speed changes, which will cause uneven wave size and irregular frills.

4. Main Application Scenarios

Garment edges: dress hem, camisole neckline, short sleeve cuff, bikini trim, sleepwear waistband;

Accessories: knitted scarf edge, headband, lace decorative ribbon, baby clothing trimming;

Craft decoration: handmade hair accessories, fabric ornaments and home textile lace edging.

5. Common Problems & Solutions

No obvious frill: differential feed ratio too low → increase differential value gradually;

Over-gathered wrinkled edge: excessive differential feed → turn down the ratio;

Broken edge during sewing: over-tight thread tension or unsuitable thick needle → loosen tension and replace fine ballpoint needle.

6. Machine Maintenance Note

Clear lint and fabric waste from knife and looper after daily production; lubricate movable parts regularly to keep stable stitching consistency for long-time lettuce edge mass production.
