How To Use the Double Needle

Apr 28, 2026

Instruction for Using the Double Needle on a Household Multifunctional Sewing Machine

The double needle function of a household multifunctional sewing machine helps create neat, professional stitches, decorative effects and reinforced seams at home. It is widely used for hemming cuffs, trouser legs, waistbands and home textiles, as well as adding parallel decorative lines to sewing projects. This instruction guides you through preparation, operation, tips and precautions for safe use.

1. Preparation Before Use

Make full preparations before using the double needle to avoid errors and damage to the machine or fabric.

1.1 Check the Sewing Machine and Double Needle

Ensure your machine supports the double needle function; check the manual if unsure.

Choose the right double needle (sizes 75/11, 90/14 etc.; universal, stretch, ballpoint). Match the needle to the fabric: finer for thin fabrics (cotton, linen), thicker for thick ones (denim, canvas), and stretch needles for elastic fabrics (spandex, jersey).

Check the double needle for damage (bent tip, rust), which may cause thread breakage or fabric damage.

1.2 Prepare Thread and Bobbin

Prepare two thread spools (same or different colors). Ensure the thread matches the fabric and needle (cotton for cotton fabric, polyester for synthetic fabric).

Wind the bobbin with matching thread, insert it into the bobbin case correctly, and pull out the bobbin thread.

1.3 Adjust the Machine Settings

Turn off and unplug the machine for safety during adjustment.

Remove the single needle by loosening the needle clamp screw.

Install the double needle (flat side facing back), insert it fully, and tighten the clamp screw (do not over-tighten).

Thread both spools separately through guides, tension discs and take-up levers, then thread each through the double needle's eyelets (avoid tangles).

Keep the two upper threads' tension consistent (middle position for most fabrics). Adjust slightly if stitches are loose or tight until flat and even.

2. Step-by-Step Operation

Follow these steps after preparation to use the double needle:

2.1 Test Sewing

Test on scrap fabric of the same type to adjust settings for the best effect.

Place the scrap under the presser foot and align with the needle.

Lower the presser foot and sew slowly. The upper side should have two parallel lines, and the lower side a neat zigzag (from the bobbin thread).

Adjust tension or stitch length if stitches are uneven; check needle installation/size if skipping stitches.

2.2 Formal Sewing

Align the fabric with the sewing line (use presser foot or needle plate guide for straight stitches).

Lower the presser foot and sew steadily (avoid fast speed). Hold the fabric gently without pulling to prevent damage or uneven stitches.

At the fabric end, use reverse stitch to reinforce, then stop the machine.

Lift the presser foot, cut threads, leaving a 5cm tail (tie it to prevent unravelling).

3. Practical Tips for Better Results

Stitch length: 2-3mm for most uses; 1.5-2mm for thin fabrics, 3-4mm for thick fabrics.

For lightweight/slippery fabrics (silk, chiffon), use tissue paper under the fabric and tear it off after sewing.

Use different colored threads for decoration; match with decorative stitches (if supported) for personalization.

Replace the double needle regularly (after 8-10 meters or if issues occur) to ensure effect and avoid machine wear.

4. Safety Precautions

Turn off and unplug the machine when installing/replacing the needle, threading or cleaning.

Do not touch the needle or presser foot while the machine is running to avoid needle pricks.

Do not use damaged double needles (bent, rusted) to prevent injury or machine damage.

Do not sew thick/hard materials (metal buttons, thick leather) with the double needle.

After use, turn off, unplug, and store the double needle in a dry, clean place.

Following this instruction, you can master the double needle function easily. With practice, you can create professional sewing works. For problems, refer to the manual or contact after-sales service.
